Voice Rights Policy

MakeYourMusic does not allow the unauthorised cloning, imitation, or vocal impersonation of an identifiable performer. This page explains the policy, what we block, and the licensed alternative we are building.

1. What we block

Our generation pipeline rejects prompts that request:

Cloning a specific identifiable artist's voice (e.g., “in Taylor Swift's voice”, “sing like Drake”, “in the style of Billie Eilish's vocals”).
Posthumous voice cloning of estate-managed artists (Tupac, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, etc.).
Explicit voice-clone requests (e.g., “clone of Jane Doe”, “voice clone”, “impersonate [name]”) of any named person.

Prompts that describe a style or genre without naming a specific performer — “a moody R&B vocal in the style of late-90s neo-soul” — are accepted. Prompts that are about an artist as a subject — “a song about Frank Sinatra's career” — are accepted. The blocked surface is voice imitation, not subject matter.

2. Why we block

Cloning the voice of an identifiable artist without licence is a near-certain legal loss under existing law in several jurisdictions:

Tennessee ELVIS Act (2024) — express right of action for unauthorised voice cloning.
California SB 442 / Civ. Code § 3344 — right of publicity (extended in 2024-2025 to address AI voice clones).
NO FAKES Act (HR 2794 / S 1367) — pending US federal right of publicity for AI replicas, with post-mortem rights.
EU AI Act & member-state likeness rights — meaningful enforcement begins August 2, 2026.
The Suno (Warner / UMG) and Udio (UMG / Merlin / Warner) settlements (late 2025) — every major AI music platform that settled had to commit to voice-clone restrictions.

The platform-level risk of allowing even one impermissible clone outweighs the creative upside. We err on the side of refusal.

3. The licensed alternative — Voice Persona Marketplace

We believe voice cloning should be possible — with consent and compensation. We are building a Voice Persona Marketplace where indie singers and voice actors:

Opt in to having their voice licensed for AI generation.
Receive 50% of the revenue from every generation that uses their voice — the industry standard since Grimes' Elf.tech in 2023.
Set per-use floor pricing and can revoke licence with future generations.
Receive monthly payouts via Stripe Connect.

4. False positives

Our automated detection occasionally rejects prompts that legitimate creators meant innocently — for example, mentioning a famous person near the words “sounds like” even when the intent is not vocal imitation. If you believe your prompt was wrongly rejected, you can:

Rephrase the prompt without the artist name and re-submit.
Submit feedback at support@makeyourmusic.com — we review false-positive reports weekly.
